Born
in
Canada
, Phillip's life-long involvement in music began during his primary
school years with the obligatory piano lessons.
Phillip’s musical explorations continued throughout his
schooling with instruments including ukulele, baritone horn, clarinet,
and baritone saxophone. During
these explorations, Phillip performed with several ensembles, including
a five-year stint with both the jazz and concert bands from his high
school, playing baritone saxophone and first chair clarinet respectively.
Also during this period, he played 1st chair clarinet with
the Peterborough Youth Symphony. Personal
high-water marks of these years included Phillip's first full-length
recording, and several performances in
Toronto
's Roy Thompson Hall, home of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
Whilst
at University, Phillip taught himself to play guitar, eventually
subsidising his school fees by playing and singing in a variety of folk
and rock bands. After
a few years of performing in the beer-soaked student pubs of eastern
Canada, he began playing further a field, until his travels brought him
to Australia, where he was introduced to what is conceivably the world's
oldest instrument; commonly referred to today as a didgeridoo.
Literally awe-stuck by the instrument's deceptive simplicity, he
taught himself how to play, and for the next few years, Phillip
travelled extensively around
Australia
, learning playing techniques, and learning about the extraordinary
culture from which the instrument has originated.
Now
and Australian citizen resident in the
UK
, Phillip has become one of the
Australia
’s most sought-after performers abroad.
Over the past ten years he has performed in countless festivals
world wide, including repeat performances at Glastonbury Festival, WOMAD,
London
’s Royal Opera House, and a performance at
London
’s Barbican Centre with Rolf Harris.
He has also represented his adopted home country of
Australia
at many events hosted by Australian High Commissions in both
London
and (ironically) in
Canada
.
Along
with this, Phillip
has led didgeridoo playing workshops around the world.
He has also recorded and released a didgeridoo instructional
series, as well as a didge-based music CD called Indijination,
all of which continue to sell throughout
Australia
, the
UK
,
Canada
, and
Japan..
