The Australian Aboriginal Didgeridoo: A Comprehensive Introduction

This booklet entitled is designed for the absolute beginner.  It takes its reader through a detailed description of the “who, what, why, where, and when” of the didgeridoo, and then begins to systematically describe the process of circular breathing; a process fundamental to the instruments use.  Following that, there are a series of exercises designed to introduce the player to some of the instruments acoustic possibilities.

The Australian Aboriginal Didgeridoo: A Comprehensive Introduction (Tape)

This tape is geared for the absolute beginner.  The first side takes its listener through the same easy to follow directions relating to circular breathing as the booklet which shares its title. These are accompanied by audio demonstrations to clarify any confusion.  Following this, several examples of the instruments sound possibilities are described and demonstrated.  The second side is extended examples of the latter exercises without all of the narration.  It concludes with a piece of didgeridoo music to show how some of the playing techniques can be incorporated in prolonged playing sessions.

The Australian Aboriginal Didgeridoo: Acoustic Variations and Practice Rhythms (Tape)

This tape is designed for more advanced players who are already familiar with the basic principles of the instrument.  NB:  There is no instruction relative to the basic principles of circular breathing on this tape.  Rather, it picks up on some of the practice exercises contained on the first cassette, and moves on to more challenging playing techniques.  It also contains several practice pieces of varying speeds, styles, and time signatures.  These are designed to help players out of “stuck” playing patterns; a common complaint among my more advanced pupils.  The first portion of each piece demonstrates the rhythm, and is performed on didgeridoo and percussion.  At the mid-point of each piece, the recorded didgeridoo drops away, leaving the player to practice with a steady rhythm without any key or style conflict.  This type of practice tool is unique to this series.

The Australian Aboriginal Didgeridoo: The Complete Guide (CD)

This CD combines the information from both of the cassettes, with the added ease of indexed tracks.  This avoids the inconvenience of fast-forwarding and re-winding to desired practice material.  I believe that there is no other product of this nature which is as comprehensive in its scope.

All of the audio material was recorded on state of the art digital recording equipment to give the listener the truest sound reproduction possible, and all of the printed matter was produced on recycled paper.  The cover artwork was commissioned specifically for this series.  It was painted by Tim Ives, who is a member of the Bundjalung Aboriginal nation.  Should you be interested in his work, he can be contacted c/o Gondwana Gifts.
